“Be Careful!”

1John 4:14 – And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world.

A hundred times I heard Gramma warn me: “Be careful!” What did she think I was going to do? Fall out the window while I was spraying a little Windex? Knock that big vase onto my head while I was changing the nearby light bulb? I was just moving a piece of furniture for her and Grampa. Did she think I was going to bust a hole in the wall? Well, it was my Gramma. As far as I was concerned, the main thing I needed to be careful of was losing my patience.

What an exercise in being careful we have all experienced in the last year. Cover your face! Don’t get too close! Watch your money! Load the closets with toilet paper! The vaccine? Be careful! If Gramma had lived to see the day, she would have been in her element.

I am not, in principle, against being careful. We should be careful about our health and the health of others. There are risky decisions we all need to make with care, like who we marry, taking on large debts, and others. We need to be careful of the deceitfulness of sin. Sin promises pleasure, but the rewards are disillusionment and death.

I know of at least one thing that a lot of people are too careful about when they need not fret in the least: serving Jesus Christ. The decision to serve Him and the willingness to give Him more of ourselves are tragically inhibited by our needless carefulness. Why so scared of the Savior?

As soon as you start thinking about being more devoted to Jesus, you will hear a voice inside: “Too risky!” Somehow the devil got into your head, and what a hypocrite he is! When he has us in his power, he’s always telling us to do the stupid thing and be brave about it. But when he’s about to lose us to the Savior Jesus, he suddenly changes his tone. “Too risky,” he says.

The devil is a liar, a cheat, and a killer. Jesus was sent by God to be the Savior of the world. Of whom should we be careful?
